Walk the crater that buried Pompeii.
A 30-minute switchback up loose volcanic gravel ends at the lip of an 800-foot caldera that has not been entirely quiet since AD 79. Steam vents still drift up out of the inner wall. To the west: the Bay of Naples in one frame. To the south-east: Pompeii, 1,300 metres straight down. No other active volcano in Europe lets you walk this close to the mouth.

The buried city
Pompeii, frozen at the moment.
Twenty thousand people lived here on 23 October AD 79. By the next morning the city was under six metres of ash. The forum, the brothel, the bakery with the bread still in the oven, the plaster casts of bodies caught mid-stride — they are all still where the eruption left them. The only Roman city you can walk through as a Roman would have.

The quieter sister
Herculaneum, where the upstairs survived.
Pompeii is the famous one. Herculaneum is the one to actually visit. Buried by hot mud rather than ash, the wooden beams charred but stood — so upper floors, balconies, wooden furniture, even loaves of bread carbonised in ovens are still in place. Smaller site, a fraction of the crowds, and the houses feel like rooms you could move into tomorrow.
